Seeding failure can be prevented by improving and strengthening the early stages of the growth.
According to Iran Nanotechnology Initiative Council (INIC), results of the research show that the germination and early growth of the seed can be modified by adding silicon nanoparticles to the seeds or through the application of coating on the seeds by activating defensive systems.
In this research, various types of lentil were firstly collected from the Iranian and international research institutes. Then, germination tests were carried out to study the reaction of various parameters effective on the growth of the seeds collected from various geographical areas to the saline level and silicon dioxide nanoparticles.
During the germination process, a number of indicators were evaluated such as germination, crop growth power, germination rate and some of parameters of early growth of the crop.
Results showed that salinity significantly slows down the germination process. However, the application of silicon dioxide (SiO2) nanoparticles decreases the undesired effects of salinity on germination and the root and stem length of the crop. It also speeds up the germination and growth of the crop. It was also observed that various types of crops show different reactions to silicon nanoparticles, and the best reaction belongs to crops originated in Mexico, Syria and Jordan (arid and semi-arid regions).
Results of the research have been published in The Journal Agriculture and Forestry, vol. 61, issue 3, 2015, pp. 19-33.
